Decades ago, the phrase ‘green power’ didn’t apply very well to a car. Green simply did not imply power as in ‘vroom vroom’! But when a powerful Hollywood star like Leonardo DiCaprio decides to go green, he just takes the fastest and the greenest. DiCaprio recently changed over from his Toyota Prius hybrid, going in for a gleaming Tesla Roadster. This electric beauty runs 244 miles on one charge and costs a hundred thousand dollars.
Top speed? 125 mph –that’s real snazzy for an electric. The star of Titanic, Man in the Iron Mask and the recently released Revolutionary Road loves the rush he gets from his new eco-friendly wheels. Unlike a piston-driven conventional engine that needs to rev up momentum , an electric can seem like a warpdrive baby! DiCaprio who has recently been appointed brand ambassador for watchmaker Tag Heuer will go one step further as an eco-warrior by supporting the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Green Cross International with royalties generated from these watch deals. He is in good company as far as Tesla goes. George Clooney and Matt Damon are also Roadster fans alongwith Arnold Schwarzenegger… the 100K Green List keeps growing! What better compliment to an electric car than to drive it onto the carpet at the Academy Awards? And who better to do it than ‘Green Jack’ DiCaprio! And the star magic certainly works. Tesla has sold 500 Roadsters as of May 2009!
